The boss, Jose Mourinho, gave Manchester United fans what they wanted on Sunday May 21, 2017, during the last United game of the season, a Premier League clash between United and Crystal Palace – at Old Trafford, and what a thrill it was when the Portuguese manager introduced a teenage sensation, a Wonder Kid – England’s Under-16 and Under-17 level captain. United’s young prodigy Angel Gomes made an appearance as the 16-year-old came off the bench for his first taste of Premier League football inside the final five minutes, in place of Captain Wayne Rooney. A captain replaces another captain, if you ask me! – What a day at Old Trafford.
Angel Gomes was introduced into the game with just 5 minutes to go, replacing Captain Wayne Rooney (photo: below). Gomes who became the youngest player to appear in the Premier League for any team, showed some cute touches in a small cameo and added to the feeling around Old Trafford that the future is bright after an encouraging display by United’s youngsters.
According to manutd.com Angel Gomes is a prodigious talent who has sparkled at the lower age groups for United and looks set to play a key role for the Under-18s this season. Born in London, the son of Gil Gomes – a former Portugal Under-21 international – already has over 20 Academy team appearances under his belt, including FA Youth Cup experience. The first of these came at Middlesbrough in the final game of the 2014/15 season, when he was just 14 years old, and he only turned 16 at the end of August.
The diminutive forward demands possession and likes to be involved, keeping the ball moving with short and long passes. His close control and dribbling skills are sure to entertain any supporter and he can resemble a Brazilian in terms of his movement and confidence. A clever finisher who is also capable of unleashing long-range efforts, he knits attacking moves together and makes things happen.
Captaining England at Under-16 and Under-17 level is some feat and he also won the MVP award at the Manchester United Premier Cup in 2015, picking up his trophy from ex-Reds defender Gary Pallister.
It was a good thing that Gomes was introduced by Mourinho in a game that United won convincingly at Old Trafford — by defeating Crystal Palace 2-0. Angel Gomes definitely has a future career and success with Manchester United. He’s a Wonder Kid . . .
Up Man U!
