Mourinho Revenge: Manchester United 2 v. 0 Chelsea

United v. Chelsea

Sunday April 16, 2017 | Easter | Premier League | Old Trafford | Attendance: 75,272 | Scorers: Rashford 7min, Herrera 49min

Manchester United registered a massive victory in the race for the Premier League’s top four, beating the leaders quite comfortably thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera. Rashford gave the Reds the perfect start with a composed finish inside seven minutes before Herrera’s deflected shot found the net early in the second half to secure a memorable win.

Boss Jose Mourinho made four changes from Thursday’s Europa League draw against Anderlecht in Belgium as David De Gea returned in goal and Ashley Young came in to captain the side, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic named on the bench.

At the 6th minute, there was  a chance as Lingard robbed David Luiz of the ball and it quickly falls kindly to Rashford, who takes a decisive touch on the edge of the penalty area and drags a low shot wide of the post .

On the 8th minute dot, Herrera plays a world-class pass that puts Rashford through on goal and the teenage sensation finishes with excellent composure, guiding the ball into the bottom corner of Chelsea’s net  to put United in front with the first goal!

Rashford scores against Chelsea

After United’s first goal Chelsea appeared to be a little shell-shocked following United’s opening goal – they have rarely trailed this season!

The Red Devils were in charge at the break. At half time It was a tense and tight match, and United had displayed slight superiority as they controlling 59% of the possession compared to Chelsea’s 41%. United also had four shots at target compared to Chelsea’s one.

During the 49th minute Herrera hit a shot from the edge of the penalty area that deflected off Zouma and sailed into the back of the net for the second goal!!

It filled me with joy as United fans started chanting the manager’s name from all four corners of the stadium following Herrera’s early goal in this second half. Can the Red Devils hang on to what would be a vital Premier League win? I thought! Of course they did and I was most thrilled and elated to no end!

In hindsight, during the 53rd minute, almost exactly, heavy rain took over, falling on Old Trafford, once again, which arguably added to the drama of what was already a tense finale. What a match!

BOSS JOSE MOURINHO REACTED TO THE MANCHESTER UNITED 2 CHELSEA 0 BIG MATCH
WE’LL FIGHT ON BOTH FRONTS

“I can not yet give up the Premier League. We have to try. If one day we are in the Europa League and in the Premier League the distance is too big, then we have to prioritise and nobody can criticise us if in the last matches of the league we do it in a different way. But while it is mathematically possible, we have to go with everything we have.”

BOSS HAPPY FOR THE BOYS

“I think everyone did what they had to do. Everybody fought really hard. Bailly and Rojo, they deserve a special mention because they have played in absolutely every game, non-stop, since the injuries of Smalling and Jones. But I am really happy with the team and the results, because the Manchester City and Liverpool results left us in the position of needing to win. Not even a draw would be a good result for us, so I am really happy for the boys.”

MOURINHO PRAISES RASHFORD

“He played fantastically well. I think he also had a very good game at Stamford Bridge in the cup. He had exactly the same chance to score, even playing with 10 men in the second half, because he is faster than their defenders and he can get behind them. But today he scored and it was in the beginning of the match, which gave the team more confidence and stability. So it was very important and the kid played fantastically well.”

JOSE ON HIS TEAM SELECTION

Asked by Sky Sports about his team selection, Mourinho dryly said: “Maybe we didn’t rest. Maybe we just chose the team that we thought was the best team.”

This is a Mourinho revenge – if you ask me!
