Manchester United boosted hopes of qualifying for the Europa League knockout stages with a convincing 4-1 victory over Turkish side Fenerbahce at Old Trafford on Thursday night. United took correct penalties from two Frenchmen, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, and another stunning strike from Pogba which gave United a first-half surety. Jesse Lingard added the 4th goal shortly after the break. Robin van Persie netting on his return to Old Trafford.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho had revealed before the match that no player in his squad is untouchable ahead of today’s UEFA Europa League group-stage clash with Fenerbahce at Old Trafford – and it turned out that way.

Paul Pogba showed glimpses of his true quality as he netted a stunning goal as part of a double. Pogba led the way for United in an emphatic win to bounce back from criticisms after a poor showing in Monday’s 0-0 draw at Liverpool, while as a reminder, Sir Alex Ferguson’s boy, Robin van Persie, netted a late consolation on his return to Old Trafford.

Van Persie’s late goal drew a huge round of applause from the United crowd and guest-fans alike, including the watching United legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. United cruised on to six points from three matches in Group A with one of our more convincing wins under Jose Mourinho. I’m still skeptical about the Portuguese man though.

At the end of the match, Van Persie exchanged words and pleasantries with several of his former United team-mates as he left the pitch to a hero’s ovation from the Stretford End of Old Trafford.

The boss, Jose Mourinho, made seven changes to his side for today’s Europa League match. David De Gea, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Paul Pogba are the only players to remain from Monday’s goalless draw against Liverpool at Anfield. Captain Wayne Rooney returned to the starting line-up, along with Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw, Michael Carrick, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial. Marouane Fellaini, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford were among the substitutes.

United: De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Bailly, Shaw; Carrick, Pogba; Mata, Rooney, Lingard; Martial.

Subs: Romero, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo, Fellaini, Memphis, Ibrahimovic, Rashford.

Fenerbahce: Demirel, Sener, Skrtel, Kjaer, Kaldirim, Souza, Topal, Neustadter, Potuk, Volkan, van Persie.

Subs: Fabiano, Koybasi, Civelek, Emenike, Koca, Stoch. (Only six subs for Fenerbahce)

I had a bust of nostalgia when Robin Van Persie stepped onto the pitch at his Old Trafford hangout, and he was even greeted with cheers from United fans – with a banner hanging amongst United fans hailing our ex-football maestro.

The Dutchman had earlier said to journalists elsewhere that he would’ve still been at Old Trafford if Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge. I miss Van Persie; every United fan and supporter shares my enthusiasm and nostalgia for the left-footed and awkwardly endowed-bow-legged Dutchman . . .

Up Man U!
