Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic can be their new Eric Cantona – Sven Goran Eriksson
Former England football boss, Sven Goran Eriksson, said recently that Manchester United’s new talisman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, could be Manchester United ’s new Eric Cantona (United’s legend), writes Steve Bates in Gothenburg .
Continuing , Eriksson opined that once Zlatan is fully fit and firing, the superstar striker is capable of having the same impact on the Mancunian Reds as fellow frontman Eric Cantona had when he joined Manchester United in 1992.

The swaggering Frenchman (Cantona’s) arrival from Leeds United triggered the start of a sustained era of Manchester United’s Premier League domination under Sir Alex Ferguson and Eriksson isn’t ruling out a repeat performance following this summer’s United’s capture of his fellow frontman, the Swedish countryman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“You can’t say for sure, of course, but Zlatan is the same type of charasmatic figure as Cantona so it’s entirely possible he could have the same effect on United as Cantona had all those years ago.
I am certain United will hope that is the case and if you buy a player like Zlatan you are getting someone who is capable of inspiring the players around him by the way he performs. Cantona did that and helped many of the young players at United at that time.
Zlatan has had an impact wherever he plays because of his ability and his character so a big club like United is an ideal stage for him”
– Sven Goran Eriksson, former England boss
According to reports, some critics suggested that at 34 Ibrahimovic’s best days are behind him and he only came to the Premier League (for free) for one last giant payday – earning £220,000 a week on his two-year Old Trafford deal – approaching and/or rivaling United captain Wayne Rooney’s weekly paycheck.
Recently and after Zlatan’s United debut with consequent goals galore in all his matches so far, United legend and mercurial Frenchman Eric Cantona claimed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic cannot be the king of Manchester, insisting that he (Cantona) will be the King of Manchester instead. Zlatan Ibrahimovic responded immediately to Eric Cantona’s claim that he cannot be the king of Manchester, by insisting he will be the GOD of Manchester instead.
Cantona told Ibrahimovic he could be the “prince” of the City of Manchester following his switch to Old Trafford, but he (Cantona) will always be the king.
It was also reported that Ibrahimovic had previously remarked after his departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG): “I came like a king, I left like a legend.”
Not done, Cantona told Ibrahimovic that joining Manchester United is the best choice he ever made following his move to Old Trafford. The club great, Eric Cantona, said:
“I have a personal message for Zlatan: You decided to go red. It is the best choice you ever made. When you walk into the Theatre of Dreams, when you can feel the ghosts of the legends that have been here before. when you score that first goal right in front of Stretford End, when you hear the crowd chanting your name, when your heart beats so strong that it bursts out of your chest, when you feel that you will love them as much as they will love you, you will know, my friend, that you finally made it home.
Just one last thing, there can only be one King in Manchester. You can be the Prince if you want to. And the number 7 is yours if you are interested. That is my welcome gift to you…The King is gone! Long live the Prince!”
– Eric Cantona, former United star striker & legend
The notoriously eccentric Swede, Zlatan, delivered the perfect one-liner back to the mercurial Frenchman as follows:
“I admire Cantona. And I heard what he said, but I won’t be King of Manchester. I will be God of Manchester”
– Zlatan Ibrashimovic, Manchester United star striker
