Manchester United came from behind after conceding a 77th-minute opener goal scored by Crystal Palace’s attacker Jason Puncheon and equalized swiftly through Juan Mata to take the final into extra-time.

Manchester United suffered a blow in the additional period of 30 minutes when Chris Smalling was sent off for a second bookable offence (which I analyzed and found devilishly necessary because the Crystal Palace guy would’ve gone ahead to score) but the remaining ten men rallied to great effect and Jesse Lingard smashed in a stunning volley with 10 minutes left on the clock. It was a fitting goal to win the FA Cup and it triggered tremendous celebrations when referee Mark Clattenburg blew the final whistle.
What a relief!
Manchester United have won the FA Cup for a record-equalling 12th time after a dramatic extra-time win over Crystal Palace at Wembley.
As the celebrations and trophy presentation got underway, a number of Reds players and boss Louis van Gaal spoke to BBC Sport and MUTV on the pitch to give their thoughts. Here is what they had to say.
The Red Devils react to FA Cup triumph thru memorable quotes below:
Louis van Gaal: “It’s fantastic to win this title for the club, for the fans and also for me because now I’ve won a cup in four countries and not many managers can say that so I’m happy. Of course I was concerned, with 10 players and we’ve played Tuesday evening also but we have deserved it I think. It was a super goal [from Lingard] but we knew that!”
Wayne Rooney: “It was a great advert for the Premier League. Credit to Crystal Palace, it was a tough game but we hang on in there and a good goal from Jesse – to come from Manchester it must be an incredible feeling for him. We’ve had a tough end to the season but I thought we worked very hard today. Our determination has got us through this so we’re delighted. It’s a special moment – it’s a competition I’ve watched growing up as a fan, I’ve lost two finals before so I’ll enjoy this tonight. It has been a while [since United last won a trophy] but it’s great for the fans, it’s fantastic. To win a trophy will lift the supporters.”
Michael Carrick: “You can’t buy the feeling of lifting the trophy. It’s a lot of emotion, relief and satisfaction but a lot of joy to finally lift it. To finally win it’s great for the players and the staff who work so hard to prepare us right and for the fans to give them something to shout about. It’s a smashing day.”
Juan Mata: “It’s more difficult when you’re on the bench when it’s a final but we won in the end and I think we never gave up. We have our FA Cup – it’s been a tough season but a very good end for the fans. It was a great goal from Jesse [Lingard], we all know his qualities and we’re very happy for him, but it’s about enjoying it now and today we can bring the trophy home. It’s a great feeling to win this trophy for the first time with Manchester United.”
Jesse Lingard: “I saw it come across, it landed nicely for me, all I had to do was hit it sweet and luckily I did that. We found out two days before [what the team was] to get our minds right and prepare. As a substitute you’ve always got to be ready and thankfully I was. It’s a massive feeling, to win it is a great feeling and ending the season on a high. My family and friends are here watching so it’s fantastic. It’s the United way – we have such good team spirit.”
David De Gea: “It was a great game and a great goal [by Lingard]. I think we deserved to win this final and we can now enjoy it. It’s a long time since Manchester United have won this trophy and we’re happy. It’s very important – to finish the season with the FA Cup for the fans, for the club is really good. It’s difficult to say in words. The fans are really happy. It’s more difficult and more special to win with 10 men because we had difficult moments. That’s the FA Cup, it’s really good.”
Daley Blind: “It’s an incredible feeling to lift the FA Cup – not many players get to say that. Especially the FA Cup which is a big cup over the world, it’s amazing. Team spirit is great and has been all season. We fight until the end of the season for victories and we can be very proud.”

United players were showered in silver confetti after picking up the FA Cup at Wembley as the squad celebrated the historic Wembley win over Crystal Palace.
The Red Devils have now won the competition on 12 glorious occasions, matching the record set last season by Arsenal.
Manchester United made my day today. Though we ended up in 5th place in the Barclays Premier League table, at least, we still have something to celebrate this year of Our Lord – 2016.
The flying Dutchman, Louis Van Gaal, has now won a cup in four countries and that’s a feat. The United board should give Van Gaal another chance to complete what he started – a revolution in football at Old Trafford based on possession football – the future of football philosophy in the Theater of Dreams.
