Revisiting Rooney’s back-heeled ‘Pure Magic’ goal against Swansea

There is no doubt that Wayne Rooney’s back-heeled flick to score the second vital goal against Swansea City last week was pure magic. It was reminiscent of his younger active years at Everton and later during his early appearances for United. In the course of that match, Anthony Martial, on the run with Swansea defenders in tow, crossed a low ball and Rooney glanced in a finish with his back heel to become United’s second-highest goal scorer with 238 goals. That 77th-minute strike was so, so pure magic.

Rooney (a.k.a. Waza. I heard Van Persie call Rooney that nickname at Old Trafford before) sealed a vital victory for United when he brilliantly turned home Anthony Martial’s cross with the back of his heel in front of the Stretford End. The strike also moved him into second place in the club’s all-time goalscoring charts by overtaking Denis Law to take him onto 238 goals for the Reds, just 11 behind Sir Bobby Charlton’s record.
